Sweet Shoppe Quilt-Along – Day 9

Welcome back for Day 9!  After 8 days of piecing blocks and half-square-triangles (and I think we can all agree that we’re experts at making HSTs by now!) we’re finally going to start assembling our quilts!

Today we’re making rows!  I just loved making a row quilt for last year’s quilt-along, so I thought we’d give it another try this year with a different shape and size.

You’ll need to gather the following:

From Day 2:
12 red print #3 2″ x 2″ HST units
12 green print #3 2″ x 2″ HST units
(you’ll have 4 of each left over for another project)

From Day 3:
36 red print #2 1½” x 1½” HST units
36 green print #2 1½” x 1½” HST units
(again, you’ll have 4 of each left over)

From Day 4:
9 split quarter-square triangle blocks
9 mirror split quarter-square triangle blocks
(you’ll have 1 of each left over)

From Day 5:
6 Minty Fresh blocks

From Day 6:
6 Wrapped Sweet blocks

From Day 7:
12 Peppermint blocks

From Day 8:
12 Lollipop blocks

You’ll also need to cut from your background fabric:
4 rectangles 1½” x 3½”
4 rectangles 1″ x 3½”

Let’s start assembling day by day:

1.  Lay out 12 red print 2″ x 2″ HST units and 12 green print 2″ x 2″ HST units in 2 rows of 12 units each, alternating 2 greens and 2 reds as follows.  Join the pieces in each row.  Press seam allowances open.

Make 2 measuring 2″ x 18½” unfinished.

2.  Lay out 36 green print 1½” x 1½” HST units in 2 rows of 18 units each alternating direction as follows.  Join the pieces in each row.  Press seam allowances open.

Make 2 measuring 1½” x 18½” unfinished.

3.  Lay out 36 red print 1½” x 1½” HST units in 2 rows of 18 units each alternating direction as follows (note that the red HSTs slant in the opposite direction of the green HSTs above).  Join the pieces in each row.  Press seam allowances open.

Make 2 measuring 1½” x 18½” unfinished.

4.  Lay out 9 split quarter-square triangles and 9 mirror split quarter-square triangles in 2 separate rows as follows.  Make sure that you orient the blocks correctly to create a ribbon effect.  Join the pieces in each row.  Press seam allowances open.

Make 1 of each measuring 2½” x 18½” unfinished.

5.  Lay out 6 Minty Fresh blocks in a row, alternating prints.  Join the pieces in each row.  Press seam allowances open.

Make 1 measuring 3½” x 18½” unfinished.

6.  Lay out 3 Wrapped Sweet blocks, 2 white 1″ x 3½” rectangles and 2 white 1½” x 3½” rectangles in a row as follows.  Note that the 2 white 1″ x 3½” rectangles should be placed on the outside edge of each row and the 2 white 1½” x 3½” rectangles should be placed between the 3 blocks.  Join the pieces and press seam allowances toward the white rectangles.  Repeat to make a second wrapped sweet row.

Make 2 measuring 3½” x 18½” unfinished.

7.  Lay out 12 Peppermint blocks in 2 rows of 6 each, alternating prints.  Join the pieces in each row.  Press seam allowances open.

Make 2 measuring 3½” x 18½” unfinished.

8.  Lay out 12 Lollipop blocks in 2 rows of 6 each, alternating red and green prints.  Join the pieces in each row.  Press seam allowances open.

Make 2 measuring 6½” x 18½” unfinished.

Phew!  I know that was a lot of piecing, but isn’t it fun to see these rows of sweets come together?!

I hope to see you back here Friday for Day 10!  We’ll finish assembling our quilt tops (yay!) and I’ve got a fun embellishment idea to share with you!
