“On the 3rd day of Christmas my true love gave to me, three french hens…”
Ok, so it’s not the 3rd day of Christmas, but it is the 3rd day of QN‘s 12 Days of Best Christmas Quilts blog tour and while I don’t have french hens, I do have calling birds!
And they are sew sweet – perfect for adorning your Christmas tree or to add a little something extra to a beautifully wrapped package! The pattern for my quick and easy ornaments can be found on page 24 of Quilters Newsletter’s special issue Best Christmas Quilts 2012. Best Christmas Quilts 2012 is available now on newsstands and in bookstores and quilts shops. It’s also available through www.quiltandsewshop.com in both hardcopy and digital editions.

I actually made the pillow version of Let it Snow first as a Christmas gift for my mother. When she opened her gift and started to laugh, I looked at the pillow and realized that I’d forgotten to give the snowmen arms. I was horrified, but it turns out that she was laughing because she had also made a snowman pillow for me – go figure. She didn’t even notice that the snowmen didn’t have arms! Needless to say, they have arms now!
I loved making the snowman panels for the pillows (yes, I made one for me!) so much that I decided to adapt the pattern into a table runner, something that I could keep out not just for Christmas, but for the rest of winter as well. Because of the hand work in the snowman panels, I decided to keep the patchwork in the center of the table runner simple. I chose homespuns because I think they instantly convey warmth, but these projects would be equally charming in any fabric that suits your taste or decor.
Here’s a close-up of one of the snowmen. Isn’t he cute! I made him out of felted wool and appliquéd him to the background using a whipstitch. Super simple and fast. But you can use whatever material and appliqué method you prefer. Change up the color of the hats, add whatever embellishments speak to you, and have fun — just don’t forget the arms!!

Oh my goodness! Those little birds are so precious and then those adorable snowmen…just looking at them makes me want to start decorating for Christmas! I am certainly going to try to create some of those cute little birds for my bird tree!!! Now is it will just turn cold, so I can snuggle up to the fire and sew the night away! 🙂

Love the birds – both the cloth ones and the wood one. Red cardinals are big where I live but a little yellow and black is certainly acceptable! The calling birds are wonderful. My daughters and I will certainly be making some for Christmas. The snowmen as terrific on the tablerunner and pillow sham. I have to admit that I have really started liking tablerunners and as I have made one for Thanksgiving and working on my Halloween one, your design seems like the perfect choice for Christmas and the winter season in general. I like things that can carry through an entire season as your snowmen certainly can. Thanks for your terrific designs.

OMGosh what a very generous giveaway … I would so love to be the lucky recipient of Red Rooster fabric — my daughter and son-in-law are doing Snowman theme for their Christmas tree this year (last year was a mess because she was in a serious car accident on 18th of November — Christmas just wasn't the same even though we did decorate, etc.) Any way I bend your ear too much. Jen, I love the snowmen pillow and the story about you and your mom making each other snowmen pillows for Christmas. One year my mom and I bought each other Hallmark thimble ornaments. We had such a good laugh about that and continued to buy each other ornaments until they completed the series.

Funny how our minds turn to Christmas when the temperatures outside reach the triple digits. How about a snowman to cool us all off? Your patterns are just that "cool."

Really love the table runner. I have been looking for a christmas one and with all the snowmen I have collected this will work wonderful. Can't wait to try it.

OOOOOHHHHH i can hardly wait to get a copy of the Best Christmas Quilts magazine so i can make these Calling Birds, a little fabric would be great too but i love birds and my Grands love hanging them from the trees. And a wonderful tip to use scraps, don't i have a lot of those. thanks, scarlette
