Sweet Shoppe Quilt-Along – Day 8

Happy Monday and welcome back for Day 8 of the Sweet Shoppe Quilt-Along!

Today we’re making lollipop blocks!

These blocks couldn’t be easier—we’ll be strip piecing the lollipop stick units and making snowball units for the lollipop tops.  Fast and fun, so let’s get started!
Today you’ll need to gather:
2 red print #1 3½” x 3½” squares
2 red print #2 3½” x 3½” squares
2 red print #3 3½” x 3½” squares
2 green print #1 3½” x 3½” squares
2 green print #2 3½” x 3½” squares
2 green print #3 3½” x 3½” squares
48 white 1½” x 1½” squares
2 white 1⅞” x 42″ strips
2 white 1⅞” x 3½” rectangles
1 gray print ¾” x 42″ strip
1 gray print ¾” x 3½” rectangle

To make your lollipop blocks:
1.  Sew a white 1⅞” x 42″ strip to either side of the gray print ¾” x 42″ strip to make a lollipop stick strip set.  Press seam allowances toward the gray print.

2.  Crosscut the lollipop stick strip set into 11 lollipop stick units 3½” wide.  Note:  if your strip set is sufficiently long to cut 12 lollipop stick units, do so, if not, proceed to step 3.

3.  If necessary (see step 2), sew a white 1⅞” x 3½” rectangle to either long side of the gray print ¾” x 3½” rectangle to make a 12th lollipop stick unit.  Press seam allowances toward the gray print.

4  On the wrong side of the 48 white 1½” x 1½” squares, use a pencil to lightly draw a diagonal line from corner to corner.

5.  Layer a marked white 1½” square atop a red/green print 3½” x 3½” square with right sides together as shown.  Stitch the pair together on the drawn line.

6.  Trim seam allowances to ¼” and press toward the red/green print.

7.  Repeat with remaining 3 corners to make a snowball unit measuring 3½” x 3½” unfinished.

8.  Sew a lollipop stick unit to a red/green snowball unit to make a lollipop block.  Press seam allowances toward the snowball unit.

9.  Repeat to make 12 lollipop blocks measuring 3½” x 6½” unfinished, 2 from each red print and 2 from each green print.

They look a little diamond-shaped right now, but once they are sewn into the quilt top and the seam allowance is taken up, they’re cute as can be.

That’s it for today and these are the last blocks we’ll be making.  On Wednesday, Day 9, we’ll start pulling it all together and assembling our Sweet Shoppe quilts.  Can’t wait!!
